The Flash is one of the most popular comic book characters in history and he has been charming us with his humorous and sarcastic personality since he debuted in Flash Comics #1 1940. Hailing from Central City – The Flash, who is sometimes called the ‘Scarlet Speedster’ or the ‘Fastest Man Alive’, can live up to those nicknames through the use of the “speed force”. What is the speed force you ask? Well the speed force is an extra dimensional energy that helps give The Flash his abilities. Through the years there have been four major characters to use the Flash name. Those characters are Jay Garrick (1940-Present), Barry Allen (1956-Present), Wally West (1986-Present), and Bart Allen a.k.a Kid Flash (2006-2007).

Jay was the first Flash but of the four Barry Allen is the most popular and the most recognized in media. Barry Allen has been portrayed on screen by John Wesley Shipp in the 1990’s Flash TV series, Grant Gustin in the CW’s The Flash, and Ezra Miller will play Barry Allen in this years Justice League. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor – Smallville) has voiced the Flash in several of DC Comics animated shows and films. John Wesley Shipp has portrayed both Barry Allen and Jay Garrick while Kyle Gallner played Bart Allen/Impulse on Smallville.

Jay, Barry, and Wally all gained there powers in some sort of lab/chemical accident while Bart was born with powers. Bart is the grandson of Barry Allen. After each gained the power of the speed force their abilities became unimaginable. The Flash can move at the speed light as well as think just as quick. He has the ability to create speed avatars or clones of himself and he can also vibrate his body in order to pass through objects.  The Flash can even move so fast he has even been known to travel back in time. This action is what set off the chain of events that led to ‘Flashpoint’. The Flash, much like Superman , is a member of the Justice League and has also teamed with Green Lantern from time to time.

The Flash has quite a rogues gallery and some even posses the same powers he does. Reverse Flash (Eobard Thawne) and Zoom (Hunter Zolomon) both have identical powers to The Flash.  Eobard Thawne is responsible for the death of  Barry’s mother, Nora Allen, in the comics and the CW’s The Flash. The Flash also has villains Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold, Mirror Master and Captain Boomerang .

Most of already knew what the Flash was capable of and the names of some of his many rogues. But is there anything about The Flash that you did not know? I think there is and I am going to reveal some of the more unknown facts about the character that might surprise you.

  1. The Flash has a secret brother known as Cobalt Blue (Malcolm Thawne)
  2. The Flash is a murderer – That is correct fans, He killed Reverse Flash while stopping him from killing his bride
  3. The Flash’s mind works so fast that even a psychic cannot read his thoughts
  4. In a cross over with Marvel, he was merged with Ghost Rider to become ‘Speed Demon’
  5. He has beaten both Superman and Quicksilver in a race
  6. Barry Allen has died in the comics during Crisis on Infinite Earths
  7. The Flash is responsible for the Silver Age of Comics
  8. The Flash has worn the Green Lantern’s Power Ring
  9. He can travel between worlds – (Earth 1, Earth 2, etc.)
  10. He can throw Lightning

These are just some awesome facts about The Flash that you may not have known about or if you are a die hard comic book reader and Flash fan then you knew these already. The Flash is credited to many creators such as Gardner Fox, Robert Kanigher, John Broome, and Carmine Infantino. His television show is one of the highest rated on the CW Network and he is one of the most anticipated characters in Justice League with hopefully his own movie to follow soon.  The Flash is one of the more relatable and likeable characters in DC Comics. The interesting thing about The Flash is that there is not just one and I think that allows for readers to enjoy the different personas of each Flash. Each one brings their own style to the character and goes about doing things differently. Barry Allen’s Flash has seen the most tragedy with his mom being murdered, his father Henry being framed for Nora’s murder, and even Iris being killed in some versions.

I really hope enjoyed the article and I hope that this might have opened your eyes to the world of The Flash. Maybe you were on the fence about choosing a favorite hero. I can say that you wont go wrong choosing The Flash. I hope that some of this info will provoke you to open a Flash comic and possibly dig a little deeper into the character. I will say that ‘Flashpoin’t is one of the best written comics ever and might be the best work from Geoff Johns. I implore you to grab a copy or read it online when you have time. There is also an animated film adapted from the comic called ‘Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox’. That film is worth a watch as well when you have time.
