Strengths:

  • Excels in press coverage
  • Quick feet
  • No touchdowns allowed with five interceptions since 2017
  • Good feel for timing of route breaks for effective matching
  • Solid burst
  • Good timing on jump balls
  • Aggressive and accurate swipes at the catch point
  • Willing and able as open-field tackler
  • Awareness is elite

Weaknesses:

  • Needs thickness/muscle on frame
  • Scouts question lower half strength
  • Needs better knee bend
  • Can’t catch–dropped many INT’s
  • Gets too grabby at the top of routes
  • His physicality in college will be flags in the pros
  • Block shedding

Analysis: Deandre Baker has risen to the top of many ‘experts’ draft boards as the No.1 cornerback in this year’s draft. I still have him behind Greedy Williams, but Baker is talented and will talk into a team’s 1st team as soon as he is drafted. Baker’s game progressed each season for the Bulldogs, culminating with a senior season that saw him earn first-team AP All-American honors and win the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. Baker was also a first-team All-SEC pick, starting 13 games and recording 40 tackles, two interceptions and a team-high 10 pass breakups. He excels in press coverage and thrived against man-to-man challenges in an elite conference. Baker isn’t a burner, but has good play speed and the foot quickness and pattern recognition to stay tight in his coverage. I can see him getting man-handled by big, strong receivers until he adds more bulk and strength to his frame. He will need to utilize his hands in a better way–otherwise he will be penalized often.

Size: 5’11 193lbs

Draft Rank: No.2 CB

NFL Comparison: Kareem Jackson

Draft Projection: Top 15 overall
