The Deflategate Debacle

This past Wednesday, investigator Ted Wells released a comprehensive report detailing his findings in the Deflategate scandal. He concluded that it was “more probable than not” that two New England Patriots employees deliberately deflated balls for the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts. Additionally, it was “more probable than not” that Tom Brady was “generally aware of the inappropriate activities.” Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady is in for a rude awakening if he thinks he can lie to the league and get away with it.

Reports are swirling that a hefty suspension is in the works. The conclusion of this charade is rumored to be released this coming week. Brady is set to become the highest profile NFL player ever to be suspended. The biggest question surrounding the situation is, how long will it be for? Four games, eight games? It would be absurd if the punishment was only two games, and flat-out embarrassing if it was just one. Cheating in any other profession would carry a more severe punishment than the one Brady will serve, no matter what is announced.

Whatever the result, Roger Goodell is in the middle of another delicate situation. The past year has been difficult for the league in general. Players, and even a number of owners, have finally been held accountable for some of the despicable acts they perpetrate on a seemingly regular basis.

Whatever the conclusion to this debacle, the entire nation will be watching. The Patriots organization is a repeat offender, and penalties should be stiff. Expect heavy fines, draft pick confiscation and a suspension to one of the NFL’s best players. All of the recent controversy probably won’t impact television ratings, but fans are clearly starting to understand the level of deceit and contemptible behavior within the sport they love.
