Designated Survivor Recap and Review: “The Final Frontier”
Last night on Designated Survivor, President Kirkman and the FBI team focus on rescuing astronauts stuck in space due to a major hack that apparently affects both the American and Russian program with the help of an unlikely ally, Damian.
We pick up right where we left off in Hannah’s apartment where Damian has a gun to her head claiming that he has useful information. But before he’s able to tell them what ended up being time-sensitive information, Hannah turns him in where she and Aaron interrogate him to find out the why of it all. He goes on to explain that he interfered with the Icarus investigation because the Russians had a stake in the company when it was first created and only framed the first lady in order to avoid another Cold War.
Then Damian tells them information directly related to a rescue rocket that went off in order to rescue astronauts stuck in space due to some type of hack. President Kirkman doubts that his information is credible and launches the rocket and it ends up rocket crashing, after which they realize Damian is telling the truth and they continue to extract more information from him.
Then they find out that hacking is Russia’s biggest problem at the moment and that someone has been hacking both NASA and Russia’s space program and Damian has the contacts needed to find the culprit. So she goes with Damian to figure out who the hacker is.
They then track down a potential suspect who isn’t the hacker but they gain helpful information that leads them to the guilty party. They find out that it was the plumber that worked at NASA that not only got the job done but was only the messenger and not the one behind the crime, meaning it could be the start of something bigger.
Meanwhile, Kirkman reaches out to the Russian ambassador, who is reluctant to help because of the ongoing space race. So he enlists the help of former president Moss in order to try to launch another rocket to rescue the astronauts stuck in space.
Kirkman and former president Moss end up butting heads after Tom finds out that Moss cut a deal with the Russian ambassador: Russia would aid in rescuing the astronauts stuck in space in exchange for the American people to look the other way in their involvement in the Icarus investigation, AKA the one that framed the First Lady. After this, Kirkman realizes Moss has been more or less undermining him and so he fires him.
Overall, the topic of hacking involving the Russians hit very close to home being that it’s very relevant in today’s politics. But it was interesting to see that whoever’s behind this conspiracy isn’t just targeting Americans. Whatever the end game is, it must be big and I’m wondering whether or not it’ll involve more countries or if the target is just America and Russia. What we do know however is that Damian definitely still knows a lot more than just the details of Icarus investigation. The only question is, what side is he on?
