With their first round pick the Detroit Lions hit on one of the absolute biggest needs on their team, if not the NFL.  Matthew Stafford has been beat up for his entire career.  Taylor Decker from Ohio State is a big offensive tackle that will upgrade the Lion’s offensive line immediately.  Stafford is aging, and every snap that his jersey stays clean is an extension on his career.

Decker, unfortunately, does not seem like he will be able to play left tackle in the NFL.  He is a better run blocker than a pass blocker, and there are some questions about his overall athleticism. However, being below average at three of the 5fiveOL positions means Decker is an upgrade basically anywhere but guard.

One player that is sliding down the board due to injury is Myles Jack, the ILB from UCLA.  Keep an eye on the back-end of the first round, with nine more selections in this draft it is possible the Lions trade up to pick up a key piece.

Bob Quinn did decent work in his first pick as the Detroit Lions GM.  He has plenty of work left to do to get this team in a position to compete with the Vikings and Packers in the NFL Draft.
