Did Ronda Rousey break her jaw?… Probably
The Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm fight was a historic day for the UFC. The bout marked perhaps the biggest upset in the entirety of the organization’s colorful history. However, immediately after the decisive finish, rumors swirled regarding the state of former champion – Ronda Rousey. Had she broken her jaw?
Rousey was rushed to the hospital soon after the fight. There was apparently no time, or possibly no option, to speak with the media before leaving. A noteworthy detail. This behavior seemed highly unusual for a champion who’d just lost her title. Generally, both competitors are interviewed post-fight. No matter the conclusion, each person is allowed to give their thoughts on how things went and what they might have done differently.
Further attention was brought to the idea that something serious had happened, after initial reports indicated Ronda Rousey’s jawbone had been fractured in three separate places.
It made perfect sense.
Extremely early in the fight, Rousey’s jaw had been slack. After taking repeated punches and kicks to the mouth – it could have been injury, rather than fatigue, that led to her mouth staying open.
- Fighting with an open mouth is extremely inadvisable, even dangerous –
After the initial reports of a broken jaw, Dana White quelled rumors by matter-of-factly stating, “That’s bullshit. There’s nothing wrong with Ronda.” Somewhat of a peculiar thing to say after losing a fight in such horrendous fashion. At the very least she had to have been concussed.
Looking back at the fight, it’s interesting to watch how everything unfolded. If you watch Ronda Rousey leave you can pause to see what her lip actually looked like. It seemed her lower lip was cut, but supposedly it was the upper lip that was split.
If you pause this video at 1:13 or 1:23 you can get a clear image of Ronda Rousey’s post-fight visage.
There was purportedly a large cut running down the middle of her upper lip. However, if you pause the video you can see very clearly, no such cut exists…
Maybe Ronda Rousey didn’t break her jaw. It is plausible she just wanted to leave as soon as possible. However, given how little she’s shown her face, in addition to the discrepancies of initial reports, and the pictures that recently surfaced displaying her misaligned lower teeth (which is common with broken jaws), I highly doubt that.
But that’s just my take…
