After losing to the Blue Jays on Friday, the Yankees are now two and a half games back from Toronto. Since the trade deadline the Jays have been baseball’s hottest team. Taking the league by storm they’ve erased the once formidable gap in the standings, and now it seems the roles have been reversed. While the Jays have been strengthening as a unit, the Yankees have been weakening.

Injuries have begun to take their toll on the Yanks’ and at the worst possible time.

It was recently announced that first baseman Mark Teixeira is out for the rest of the season with a broken leg. The Yankees slugger was leading the team in homeruns. Teixeira was also leading the team in WAR (wins above replacement), having his best overall season in years. His resurgence, along with that of teammate Alex Rodriguez, had been a large proponent in the overachieving club’s success.

Additionally, New York will now be without Nathan Eovaldi for four weeks. One of the teams most reliable starters, Eovaldi will be sorely missed. He was leading the team in wins and innings pitched.

With these key losses it’s hard to imagine the Yankees keeping pace with the Blue Jays. The additions of David Price and Troy Tulowitzki have made an already dangerous team even scarier.

This is Toronto’s year. MVP candidate Josh Donaldson and the Jays should be in for a deep playoff run.
