The Dodgers and right-hander Kenta Maeda 27, have agreed upon an 8-year $25 million contract with big incentives that can bring his yearly salary to $13 million. Maeda got his request granted unlike last year, as his team Hiroshima Carp of the Japan Central League decided to post their 28-year old ace and receive the $20 million max bid from the Dodgers. Maeda will be formally introduced by his new team on Thursday.

Maeda, 28 performed at another high level, with the Hiroshima Carp as he received his second Sawamura award, which is granted to the best pitcher in the Japanese League. Maeda completed the year 15-8, 2.09 ERA, 1.013 WHIP, 175 SO, 5 CG, over a total of 29 starts in 206.1 Innings. Those are impressive numbers, but the issue at hand is that Maeda will pitch once every five days, versus the once a week he’s accustomed to in Japan. The Dodgers also saw red flags in Maeda’s physical, therefore the Dodgers protected themselves when adding the incentives. They would guarantee that Maeda plays in order to get paid more than the $25 million over 8 years he’s guaranteed without the bonuses.

The Dodgers overlooked the health issues and locked up Maeda long-term as they were desperate for RHP. The Dodgers lost out on Greinke to the Diamondbacks and Brandon McCarthy is out until midway through the season after being limited to 23 innings and undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015. Maeda will join a lefty-heavy starting rotation of LHP Clayton Kershaw, newly signed LHP Scott Kazmir (3yrs/$48mil), LHP lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, LHP Brett Anderson as well as LHP Alex Wood who could be used to start or come out the bullpen. This is a high risk, high reward and the best option left in free agency for the Dodgers.
