The Buffalo Bills had their offer sheet signed by tight end Charles Clay, and the now ex-Dophins TE is headed to a Bills team that is clearly trying to make it rain with cold, hard cash. The Bills have now added another piece to Rex Ryan’s offense, and this team is shaping up to be a deep threat; assuming that Matt Cassel or any of the other quarterbacks are able to throw the ball past 20 yards this season.

Shortly after signing wide receiver Percy Harvin to a three-year deal worth $24 million, they awaited news on an offer sheet to Charles Clay, that the tight end had no problem signing. Who can blame him? The deal is worth $38 million over five years, and it is a pay raise for him.

So, what does this mean for Buffalo?

It means that they can breathe a little easier now that they have signed Clay, which adds a tight end to the roster and raises their total of tight ends to one. It also means that the release of fan-favorite TE Scott Chandler stings a little less. But it also raises questions surrounding Charles Clay’s output on the field and if the Bills quarterbacks can get him, or anyone else on the offense, the ball consistently enough to be a threat.

The #BillsMafia (term for die-hard Bills fans, as well as players) has mixed reactions on the addition of Clay, and his worth is just as much in question as his production. In 2014, he had 53 receptions for 605 yards and 3 touchdowns, which is relatively small production for what the Bills are planning on paying him. Pair that with his career stats (161 receptions, 1,801 yards, 14 touchdowns), and this deal seems even more mind-boggling. As I perused through social media over the last several days, I noticed reactions from ecstatic to upset about the possible signing of Charles Clay.

Like it or not, Bills fans, Buffalo has a new tight end, and he is getting paid. If Clay doesn’t produce this season, he had better plan on buying tickets for Bills fans for the remainder of his contract. Otherwise, the boo-birds will be out in full force.
