Don’t do it Buffalo: Why signing Reggie Bush would be a mistake
The Buffalo Bills entered the NFL off-season with a plethora of running backs, but a mere two weeks before Training Camp begins their plethora has decreased drastically. Karlos Williams was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy on Friday, which was a day after rookie Jonathan Williams was arrested for DUI in Arkansas. Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports calls Reggie Bush the “favorite” to land in Buffalo, although Rapoport adds that Bush is weighing his options at the moment.
My initial reaction: Reggie Bush? Really? (Long pause)……why?
Now 31 years old, coming off of a torn ACL, what does Bush have to offer an NFL team? It’s certainly not on-field production–the last two seasons combined, Bush has managed 325 rushing yards in 16 total games, averaging 3.7 ypc. Those numbers from a 25-year-old would not warrant a roster spot on any team, let alone a 31-year-old who has shown a consistent injury history.
The Bills have LeSean McCoy inked as the starting running back and now with both Williams’ lost, Mike Gillislee would step in as next in line for touches. Gillislee has performed well in limited opportunities, rushing for 267 yards on 47 carries last season, good for 5.7 ypc. While he is unproven, he would offer more to the Bills than Bush would.
Buffalo will have to add another back, even if it is nothing more than a Training Camp body, but there are better options on the free agent market than the former Heisman Trophy winner (before he had to give it back). Former Bills Anthony Dixon, Bryce Brown and Cierre Wood are all available and are familiar with the offensive system—all three while not big names would be better fits in Buffalo than Reggie.
If Bush does sign, I can almost guarantee he will not make it through an entire Training Camp on the roster, whether that be due to health or more likely, he’s not an NFL running back anymore. This would be more of a PR stunt by Rex Ryan and the Bills, rather than an intelligent roster signing.
