untitled (48)

Strengths:

  • Great size
  • Good straight line speed
  • Good wrap up tackler
  • Reads the play well- reads offensive lineman
  • Fills running lanes

Analysis: McKinney moves well for his 6’5 250 pound frame, and is one of the most sure tackle linebackers in the draft.  While McKinney is not the most fluid linebacker in coverage, his speed allows him to keep up with most tight ends.  McKinney does not miss tackles, once he hits the ball carrier–they usually go down.

Need to Improve:

  • Plays too high- stands upright
  • Coverage skills- moving laterally, especially in zone coverage
  • Shedding blocks- can be corrected with lower pad level

Analysis: While McKinney is a rock solid tackle machine, he plays the linebacker position too high–which is not good when you are 6’5 to begin with.  CBS Sports called McKinney a “2-down thumper” which implies his lack of coverage skills.  While suspect, McKinney’s largest defect in his play is his lack of speed and balance moving laterally.

Round Prediction: 1
