Brandon Scherff- Offensive Tackle- Iowa
Size: 6’5 320lbs

Strengths:

  • Powerful and strong
  • Reads defenses well- stunts and twists
  • Moves well laterally
  • Does not get beaten by outside pass rush
  • Won’t get moved off his spot

Analysis: Scherff is one of the strongest lineman in this class, I’ll be looking to see what he scores on the bench press at the NFL Combine (should be in the top 5 lineman).  Scherff has a quick first step laterally, and throws defenders off their spot by his powerful hip burst.  He blocks very well in the open field getting to the second level consistently.

Need to Improve:

  • Body blocks too much- lacks use of hands
  • Needs a mean streak
  • Could be better guard than tackle
  • Does not keep feet moving at point of attack

Analysis: Scherff is a first round talent, but a lot of draft pundits have stated they believe he transitions better inside as a guard at the next level, rather than a tackle.  Scherff lacks an explosive burst straight into defenders and does not finish blocks consistently on film.  With coaching, and working on improving his technique, Scherff can make a solid career in the NFL.

Round Prediction: 1
