Strengths:

  • Quick feet
  • Great cuts
  • Great hands
  • Nice vision
  • Good size- body frame is all muscle
  • Good returner

Analysis: I have to admit, I did not know much about Johnson before Senior Bowl week–and I left very impressed.  Coming from FCS Northern Iowa, Johnson might not get all the hype some backs in this loaded class receive (Gurley, Gordon, Abdullah), but he has the talent to compete with them on the field.  Johnson possesses quick feet, that allow him to be decisive in his cuts through the hole.  When you look at the Northern Iowa product up close, you can easily mistake him for a bruising linebacker–he is all muscle.  I believe, while watching him at the Senior Bowl and some game tape that Johnson is a better receiver coming out of the backfield, than he is a traditional running back–he caught over 140 passes in college for  over 1,700 yards.  This kid has the skills to be good.

Need to Improve:

  • Pass protection
  • Doesn’t possess break away speed
  • Somewhat upright running style

Analysis: Johnson has a lot of tools to be a great running back in the league, but like all rookie backs Johnson will need to be solid in pass protection in order to see solid playing time.  This is a an area he will need to improve, and show he can handle the duties to being an every down back like he was in college.  While Johnson won’t outrun all defenders in space, he has the speed to get to the second level.  A good running back coach will try and get Johnson to lower his frame while hitting the hole–runs too high, but I would say he has the ability to start for some NFL teams as a rookie.

Round Prediction: 2-3
