1. Melvin Gordon- Running Back- Wisconsin
Size: 6’1 207lbs
2011 Stats: 20 carries 98 yards 1 TD

2012 Stats: 62 carries 621 yards 3 TDs
2013 Stats: 206 carries 1,609 yards 12 TDs
2014 Stats: 343 carries 2,587 yards 29 TDs

untitled (36)

Strengths:

  • Acceleration- goes from 0 to 60 faster than any back
  • Balance- always keeps his body square hitting holes, and through contact
  • Vision- knows how to read his blockers
  • Patience- doesn’t outrun his lineman, sets up blocks well
  • Keeps his legs moving- runs through arm tackles

Analysis: Gordon comes from running back factory Wisconsin, who seems to send at least one back a year to the NFL.  Gordon has a chance to be the best of that group–unbelievable acceleration, hitting the holes with a pop.  Gordon maintains a low pad level, and can break tackles with is deceptive power.  While the running back position has diminished in the NFL draft, Gordon has the talent to justify a first round draft pick.

Need to Improve:

  • Questionable hands
  • Size- can his thinner frame sustain hits
  • Lacks superior power

Analysis: Melvin Gordon should be the consensus #1 running back off the board (mainly due to the Todd Gurley injury), but he can still improve on some serious questions NFL scouts have.  Gordon finished his college career with 22 total receptions, 19 of those coming this season.  Questions about his hands will need to be answered (Combine, pro-day).  If they are poor it will hurt his overall value as an every down back.  Gordon has a thin frame, mostly made of muscle, but how will his body react to NFL punishment? These questions, along with the overall value of the running back position, can push Gordon into the second round.

Round Prediction: 1-2
