Strengths:

  • Speed-one of the fastest WRs in the draft
  • Powerful runner- not easy to bring down
  • Agile in and out of cuts
  • Great size
  • Fights through press coverage
  • Great jumper/leaper

Analysis: Coates has a superior physical skill set that few receivers possess.  Possible 4.3 40 yard speed, along with power that scouts have compared to Terrell Owens.  Even with this skill set, Coates is a raw product that does not know the position in and out.  Coates’ ability to fight through press coverage could move him up on draft boards in today’s NFL.  No doubt he will need coaching, and need to be a coachable player to succeed in the NFL.

Need to Improve:

  • Hands- drops passes, easy and hard
  • Route running- very basic skill set
  • Ran limited routes in Auburn’s offense
  • Raw knowledge of NFL offenses
  • Took plays off when ball was not going his way

Analysis: While Coates is gifted physically, he has not had the knowledge of an in-depth NFL playbook.  The offensive scheme in Gus Malzahn’s system limited Cotes to vertical patterns, drags, and outs.  At times, Coates could seem disengaged from the offense when he was not targeted in the passing game.  Bottom line, with his raw talent Coates will have a chance to be very good, he’ll have to work hard in the classroom to stand out.

Round Prediction: 3
