Strengths:

  • Accurate-especially on the run
  • Great deep ball
  • Clutch
  • Good mobility
  • Improvises well

Analysis: Shane Carden compiled an impressive career at East Carolina, throwing for 12,000 yards and 86 touchdowns. A solid leader, Carden might not have the strongest arm in the draft class, but his accuracy and mobility help him excel on the football field. He can escape oncoming pass-rushers, with great improvision, moving in and out of the pocket. Strictly watching game-tape, it is clear Carden is a better deep-ball thrower than other prospects in this class (Hundley, Petty, Grayson) even though he will be drafted behind them. Carden will not be the highest profile draft pick, or one with the greatest arm, but he will come in day one and compete/give all-out effort to make the roster. Clutch football player.

Need to improve:

  • Arm strength
  • Lacks ideal size
  • Wind-up throwing motion
  • Played in spread-system
  • Did not play the best competition

Analysis: While I am a fan of Carden, but he will need some serious coaching for his throwing mechanics in order to succeed in the NFL. Carden does not use his legs for power, at all while throwing a football. He uses his entire upper-body and therefore loses a lot of velocity. With his solid work-ethic NFL teams believe they can work with him to develop, but he is years away from competing for a starting job. Do not count him out, his intangibles, leadership, and high football IQ can help him succeed at the next level.
