After opting out of the final year of his contract and giving all of Miami a scare, Dwayne Wade re-signs with the only team he’s ever known, the Miami Heat. Wade left $16 million on the table in hopes of receiving more money–money that he justly deserved. In all of the 12 years Wade has been with the Miami Heat, he has never been the highest paid player on his team.

The 11-time All-Star and 2006 NBA Finals MVP is receiving a contract that speaks more to the value he has brought the organization than his current on-court production. He has missed at least 20 games in three of the last four seasons, so the one-year contract makes sense for the Heat organization. This gives them insurance in case the star shooting guard’s knees go out, as well as flexibility for next season’s salary cap raise.

Wade joins Goran Dragic, Luol Deng, Chris Bosh and Hassan Whiteside in Miami’s starting lineup. Chris Bosh, in particular, is ecstatic about his friend Wade’s return, posting this tweet shortly after the news broke.

I’m sure Miami shares the same sentiment.
