Eagles select Carson Wentz with 2nd overall pick
The Philadelphia Eagles sent five draft picks to Cleveland one week ago for the rights to the 2nd overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. They made it clear, they were in search of a QB. Their costly journey to find a QB ended moments ago when they selected Carson Wentz with the 2nd overall pick.
Wentz is an athletic, 6’5 gunlsinger from North Dakota State. He led NDSU to the FCS Championship the last two seasons. He is now the highest drafted non-FBS quarterback ever, at number 2 overall.
He also just won the NCAA Elite 90 Award for the third straight year. This award is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at each of the NCAA’s 90 national championships. So the guy is smart, and will most likely be able to handle the NFL playbook just fine.
He finished third in NDSU history for career passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, completion percentage, and pass efficiency rating (153.9).
His career at NDSU was short, sweet, and very successful. The Bison won the FCS Championship every year he was there. He was very efficient and was 20-3 as a starter at NDSU.
The Eagles gave up a king’s ransom in order to secure a franchise quarterback in this year’s NFL Draft. They sent five draft picks to the Browns for their 2nd overall pick. They gave up the 8th, 77th, and 100th pick in this year’s draft, along with their 1st round pick next year, and 2nd round pick in 2018.
The move has also caused backlash from within as well. Their projected starting quarterback, Sam Bradford, is now demanding a trade since it became apparent that the Eagles would indeed use the 2nd overall pick to secure a QB. Bradford will make $18M this season to either groom his replacement, or sit on the bench.
Unless a trade is reached for Bradford, the Eagles will go into next season with roughly $40M invested in the QB position.
Philadelphia will be back on the clock tomorrow, but not until Round 3 with the 79th overall pick.
