Elon vs Drexel Preview and Prediction
Elon vs Drexel Preview
Elon University men’s basketball starts a three-game road swing in CAA action with a trip to Philadelphia to face the Drexel Dragons on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Thursday will be the 10th all-time meeting between Elon and Drexel, and fourth time the foes have faced off inside the DAC. This is the second time the two teams have faced off this season, as Elon won 90-75 on Dec. 30, 2017 in Alumni Gym. Last season, Elon swept the regular season series for the second straight year, winning 93-73 in Alumni Gym on Jan. 19, 2017 and earning the 65-56 victory at Drexel on Feb. 18, 2017. Elon has won four of the last five meetings against Drexel.

The Phoenix have a 12-9 record overall and own a 4-4 mark in CAA action after falling to William & Mary 80-73 on Saturday in Alumni Gym. Elon is currently on its longest losing streak of the season after back-to-back losses.
Tyler Seibring has been solid in his first five conference games, averaging 17.3 points and 7.6 rebounds. He is also shooting 55.9% from the floor and 46.0% from three.
Elon is scoring 74.0 ppg and allowing 73.4 ppg thus far through 21 games. The team has only been held to under 70 points 6 times and under 60 points just twice this season. Offensively, Elon ranks 2nd in the CAA averaging 10.8 made three-pointers. Elon also is 2nd in the league averaging with 15.7 assists per contest.
The Phoenix continues to improve defensively, allowing teams to shoot 42.1% from the floor which ranks 2nd overall in the CAA. Elon’s 42.7% field goal percentage defense in CAA games ranks 1st in the league. Elon is also 1st in the league in defensive rebounds, averaging 29.0 per game.
The Phoenix returned all five starters and its top five scorers from a team that finished 18-14 overall and placed tied for fourth in the CAA with a 10-8 mark in 2016-17.
Get to know Drexel
After starting out the season 6-4, the Dragons have lost 10 of their last 12 games and have earned only one win in conference play.
Drexel is led by junior guard Tramaine Isabell who is averaging 18.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. The former Missouri Tiger transferred to Drexel last season, sat out the 2016-17 season before starting for the Dragons this year.
The Dragons are one of the worst teams in college basketball passing the ball. They average only 11 assists per game, ranking 332nd in all of college basketball.
As Drexel’s losing streak continues, it is hard to see how they can beat a team like Elon, who hasn’t lost more than two games in a row all season. The Phoenix are currently riding a two-game drought, but that will not reach three games as I expect them to win this game outright. Elon has dominated Drexel recently, winning four of the last five contests.
