Everything Announced at Sony’s E3 2017 Conference
E3 is officially over for another year, we saw a lot of great announcements (and a lot of bad ones). Overall it was probably one of the more weaker E3’s in recent years. Sony had a lot to bring to the table this year however as it was able to build of all its successes of last year.
Sony was my pick for last year’s winner, they came out incredibly strong with the announcements for their Spider-Man game, God of War 4, Days Gone among others. This year didn’t see Sony announce many new games and it was mostly more footage of games we already knew were coming. All of this worked in their favor as most of the footage they showed us looked amazing, while Sony might not necessarily be the winner for this year, I’d definitely put them as a very strong contender.
Sony’s strongest game in my opinion was Spider-Man, that game looks absolutely stunning and I want it as soon as possible. The gameplay looks smooth and very Arkham-like, I just hope it plays as well as it looks because it’s entirely possible it’ll end up being a pain to play, I doubt it however. It also appears that the game isn’t going to be restricted by the different Spider-Man movie rights as both Kingpin and Miles Morales (Yay) will be in the game. The graphics look amazing and very cinematic, I just hope they don’t go overboard on cut scenes and make it more movie than game. The Spider-Man suit is also a pretty nice look and distinguishes him from the movie versions of the character. The Spider-Man game currently has a release date of 2018, it’s very possible (and likely) that the date will get pushed back however.
Besides Spider-Man, the next PlayStation 4 game I have been looking forward to the most is the new zombie themed Days Gone. A lot of people seem to be fed up with the zombie genre and don’t like the idea of yet another game centered around them, while I agree I still feel like this could be the open-world zombie game that everyone’s been clamoring for. The game follows a biker named Deacon St. John (Sam Witwer) and it looks kind of like a Walking Dead/ Sons of Anarchy crossover, which I am all for. The game was announced at last year’s E3 and there has been absolutely no new information on the game until this E3 in which we received a bit more gameplay. We saw some pretty interesting game mechanics that involve zombie bears and even a little glimpse of what the game will be. I am still very excited for this game and hope that it doesn’t fall flat. Days Gone surprisingly still does not have a release date, I wouldn’t be expecting this game before 2019 at the very least.
I have to admit that I have never played any of the God of War games, I’m sure that they’re amazing and I’m confident that at some point I will get around to playing them, so with that said, I can’t really talk about this game from a fans perspective. From what I’ve seen, it looks like God of War 4 is a soft reboot of the franchise with the introduction of Kratos’ son. The gameplay is also supposed to be very different from the previous games as it has been essentially rebuilt from the ground up. God of War 4 is another PlayStation exclusive and is set for release in early 2018.
I played near 30 hours of the first Destiny game and I wasn’t a huge fan of it to be honest, it could just be that it’s not a game for me but I have a strong resentment for Bungie from how they treated the first game. Bungie released a shell of a game at launch and sold the actual game as DLC’s, pricey ones at that. Destiny 2 looks very similar to the first one in the gameplay aspect but it appears that Bungie has learned from the previous installment and is making the sequel a much more complete game. PlayStation 4 players will be getting exclusive content for the game. Destiny 2 is set for release on September 6th 2017.
The Call of Duty franchise has been in a small decline since Black Ops 2, yes they’re still selling millions of copies every release but you can notice the decreases, fan backlash has also been severe, especially with the previous game Infinite Warfare. With that said, Call of Duty: World War 2 looks extremely fun, it looks like the old Call of Duty’s and it’s apparent that World War shooters are much more universally acclaimed than futuristic ones. In the gameplay since the franchise hasn’t changed much and it looks like your usual Call of Duty. PlayStation 4 players will be getting the DLC’s a few weeks sooner than Xbox and PC players. Call of Duty: World War 2 is set for release November 3rd 2017.
One of the games that I was most impressed with and excited for last year was Detroit: Become Human. I have no idea how they’re gong to make the game work with all the different decisions you can make, it’s also entirely possible that nearly every decision will lead to the same outcome. I have to admit that my hype levels did drop a little after this E3 as the game seems to have went from androids being used to take on dangerous missions or helping humans to the generic storyline of humans vs androids, hopefully the game will still turn out well. Detroit: Become Human currently has a 2018 release date.
Besides all this we had a few other announcements…
- Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (A spinoff of the Uncharted series)
- Horizon Zero Dawn DLC
- Monster Hunter World
- Shadow of the Colossus HD Remake
- Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite
- Skyrim on Playstation VR
- StarChild (PlayStation VR)
- The Impatient (PlayStation VR)
- Final Fantasy XV Fishing VR (Yes that’s a thing)
- Bravo Team (VR)
- Moss (VR)
Sony may not have been the best conference of the year but their conference was probably the most packed one of E3, they didn’t waste a second and nearly all of their games are shaping up to be impressive.
