Fantasy baseball injury watch: Zach Britton nears return
Back in December, Zach Britton tore his Achilles during an off-season workout–crushing the Orioles already diminished hopes of competing in 2018.
Through 47 games, the Orioles are in dead last in the AL East with a paltry 15-32 record.
The Manny Machado rumor mill is beginning to whirl and the Orioles as we know it are falling apart.
Cue the return of Zach Britton…
Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com reports Britton is scheduled to start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk at the end of the month.
O’s plan for Zach Britton is for him to join Norfolk on the 30th.

I’m assuming the club will give Britton a fair bit of time not only to test his surgically repaired Achilles, but also to get his arm into shape, given that he did not participate in Spring Training. But it could be that Britton will be ready for the majors by the middle of June or so — plenty of time for him to build up trade value in advance of the deadline.
And that’s exactly what the Orioles should do–build up his trade value and ship him away for younger assets to help the rebuild.
In terms of fantasy baseball, it’s hard to pinpoint Britton’s value.
Looking at Britton’s history, he had a subpar 2017 season in which he managed a 2.89 ERA over 37 1/3 innings but was nowhere near as dominant as he had been in prior campaigns.
He is worth a DL stash in deeper leagues including dynasty and keepers, but should be left on the waiver wire in redraft formats.
