Aaron Hicks

The New York Yankees have been the most surprising team to start the 2017 baseball season–and if you said you were expecting it, I’d call you a liar. The Yankees are 21-10 and in first place in the AL East and all of Major League Baseball. Their offense has been the best in producing and scoring runs, thanks in large part to Aaron Judge and his 13 home runs–but there are other pieces to thank for the Yankees surge early in the season.

The one who I will touch on today is Aaron Hicks. The former Twin is having his best season as a big leaguer and has jumped into fantasy baseball relevancy, something he hasn’t been able to do before. As of May 10th, Hicks is slashing .338/.462/.635 with six home runs and 16 RBIs. So the question I ask, just like the Yankees as a whole, is Aaron Hicks’ start sustainable?

The answer, NO.

Sure, he will continue to see more playing time, three of the Yankees’ five outfielders are in their mid-30s and have considerable injury histories, so his opportunity is there. But history is not on his side.

Since his call-up in 2013, he has never hit higher than .256 and for his career before this season he had a batting average of .226 with an average of seven home runs per season. He’s at six right now, so he will surpass his average but don’t expect him to be hitting at this same rate.

Just like Hicks, I expect the Yankees as a whole to begin to trend downwards—it may not happen this month or next month, but MLB history has told us we always see one or two teams start out of the gate hot, only to cool down close to the All-Star break.

If you are an Aaron Hicks owner, trade him now! His fantasy value will only continue to decrease and if you can nab a more consistent or proven option, it will help your team in the long run.

Some options you could offer in return for Hicks:

Aaron Altherr-OF-Phillies

Domingo Santana-OF-Brewers

Marwin Gonzalez-Utility-Astros

Manuel Margot-OF-Padres
