The Buffalo Bills had a very busy Friday. Not only did they trade WR Sammy Watkins, but also acquired WR Jordan Matthews in a separate trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Matthews had a productive three year stint with the Eagles with 225 receptions for 2673 yards. 2016 was arguably the least effective of the three, with 73 receptions for 803 yards and 3 touchdowns. Overall, those numbers are nothing to complain about especially for an Eagles team that was trying to work in rookie quarterback Carson Wentz. In Buffalo, Matthews will be catching passes from Tyrod Taylor who is a more experienced quarterback and will be entering his third full season as a starter.

In only three years, Matthews has scored 19 touchdowns, which will be a welcoming sight for a Bills team whose wide receivers caught a combined 11 touchdowns in 2016. Matthews will join fellow newcomers Anquan Boldin, as well as Zay Jones, who was drafted 37th overall by the Bills in April. Matthews, along with the other new receivers, will have to try to make up for the lost production of Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Justin Hunter, and Marquise Goodwin, who will all be playing elsewhere in 2017.

Before the trade, I thought Matthews was a solid flex option in standard leagues, but after the trade he may work his way into the WR2 conversation, although he’s probably better served as a flex play to start the year. I believe that he becomes the Bills’ most talented wide receiver and, although he will need to pick up a new offense fast, I can see him benefiting from what should be a starting role in Buffalo. Matthews has been very productive in his three years in the league and, with the right role, he could be a steal in the later rounds of the draft.
