The Buffalo Bills completed a trade this afternoon involving wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who heads west to play for the Los Angeles Rams. Watkins had an up and down career in Buffalo. In his first two years, he had a total of 125 catches, 2,029 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns. His third season, however was interrupted with an injury which forced him to only appear in 8 games and had 24  receptions for 430 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Coming into 2017, I thought Watkins could have a bounce back year and provide some value for fantasy owners who selected him as a mid round pick, but this trade makes seeing that kind of success more difficult.

Watkins joins ex Buffalo Bill teammate and receiver Robert Woods, who signed with Los Angeles this offseason. The Rams will try to improve upon their dreadful offense from last season in which they finished last in the league in total yards, total points, and passing touchdowns. With both Watkins and Woods joining fellow wide receiver Tavon Austin , the offense should improve, but the loss of Kenny Britt, who signed with Cleveland this offseason, will certainly hurt as he was led the Rams in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns last year.

Watkins may not have the kind of year I thought he could in 2017, but he still should contribute to what was a mediocre Rams offense. With Watkins changing teams so close to the beginning of the regular season, I expect him to start slow, but by the mid point of the season, I believe he will have carved himself a nice role with the team. There have been many cases where a player receives a change of scenery and succeeds, and for fantasy owners who take a shot on Watkins, they may be rewarded.
