feud fx

The pilot episode of FX’s new show Feud: Bette and Joan premiered on Sunday night, telling the story of the making of the movie What Ever Happened To Baby Jane, which Bette and Joan both appeared in.

After not being offered any good roles anymore because of her age, Joan Crawford  (Jessica Lange) finds a book called What Ever Happened To Baby Jane and sends it to director Bob Aldrich (Alfred Molina) wanting him to make a movie adaptation of it. She has to talk him into it but he eventually agrees. Joan wants Bette to be her co-star, thinking they both are in need of a comeback and that they need to stick together since they are both aging women in Hollywood. Joan goes to see Bette perform on Broadway and goes backstage to see her and convince her to join the movie, which she does, although she doesn’t seem happy to do it. Aldrich then reaches out to the head of Warner Brothers, Jack Warner (Stanley Tucci) and at first he out right refuses since the last time he worked with Crawford was a disaster which ended in her suing him to get out of her contract. Aldrich eventually talks him into it when he tells him that he will pay him first and he gives it the green light.

Crawford and Davis are photographed signing their contracts for the film, where Crawford discovers that Davis is getting $600 more a week than her and goes into a rage. Aldrich assures her that it’s a mistake and that he will take care of it.

Later, on the first day of shooting, Crawford is unhappy with her dressing room, stating that it is too small and dirty. Davis, who arrives with her daughter BD Hyman (Kiernan Shipka) doesn’t have a set look for her character yet. She has a hairdresser visit her with a bunch of wigs to choose from and shows her one that Crawford had worn previously in another film, causing Davis to choose that one out of spite and also painting her face white and adding a beauty mark. When she walks to set, Crawford and Aldrich are stunned at her appearance, but he and the crew end up liking it and this is now her look for the film.

The two attend a small dinner party at the house of gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Judy Davis) where she tries to record a conversation and get the two to talk bad about each other. They know what she’s doing and do the opposite and say good things about each other.

We know that during the filming of the movie, Crawford and Davis tormented each other and we can’t wait to see that brought to life in the coming episodes. Sarandon and Lange portray these characters so well and it’s only going to get darker. Tune in next week and see what happens next!

Feud: Bette and Joan airs on FX Sundays at 10/9c
