Viewers tuning into the highly anticipated season premiere of “Fear the Walking Dead” on Sunday night were treated to the first extended glimpse of AMC’s long-awaited adaptation of “Preacher.”

Based off of the cult-classic series of graphic novels written by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillon, “Preacher” will follow the story of Jesse Custer (played by Dominic Cooper), a washed-up man of God who obtains a surreal and dangerous superpower after a divine encounter. Shaken in his faith, Custer is joined by his gunslinging ex Tulip (Ruth Negga) and hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy (Joe Gilgun) on an irreverent cross-country journey to literally “find God.”

“Preacher” is being produced by Seth Rogen and frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg with help from “Breaking Bad” alum Sam Catlin.

The brief video begins simply enough with a shot of a car travelling down a sun-baked highway flanked by a pristinely green cornfield. Things take an interesting turn when a muffled gunshot (presumably from inside the car) is heard, immediately followed by the car taking a sharp turn and begin plowing through the corn.

Cut to the interior of the car, Tulip is revealed to be driving, with a man she presumably just shot slumped in the seat next to her while a man in the backseat garrote’s her with a wire. Still struggling to drive, Tulip starts blindly shooting behind her head at the man in the backseat, who manages to duck every time she shoots.

The man strangling Tulip manages to drag her over the seat into the back of the car, causing the vehicle to completely lose control. Cut to an overhead shot of the car cutting an s-shaped path through the rows of grain.

Back in the car, Tulip is struggling as her assailant looms over her trying to use his weight to slowly stab her with a knife. The video abruptly ends just as she’s able to knock him off-balance.

Some fans of the comic have expressed concern as the early trailers haven’t done much to show off the property’s trademark dark humor and supernatural elements, but this short video definitely promises that the show won’t be lacking in intense and inventive action.

“Preacher” will fully premiere on May 22.
