Prairie View A&M vs Fairleigh Dickinson Preview

Prairie View A&M vs Fairleigh Dickinson

It’s here. March Madness!

The First Four may not be thought of as part of the ‘real’ bracket–but it typically delivers close games, unforgettable moments and two teams fighting to play at least one more game.

And that is exactly what we have between two 16-seeds, Prairie View A&M (22-12) versus Fairleigh Dickinson (20-13).

Get to know PV A&M

“It’s an exciting time here at Prairie View,” said PV A&M men’s basketball coach Byron Smith.  “We have to be focused, well single-minded focused, because going into this tournament it’s a one and done deal.  We like how we are playing and we like the focus of the team and the direction we are going.  We like how the team is playing together and being very unselfish.”

A&M comes in as one of the hottest teams in the country. They started the season 1-11 and went 21-1 in their last 22 games, including five of their last six games being double-digit victories.

The Panthers have a lethal guard-forward duo in Gary Blackston and Devonte Patterson. Blackston, a senior, leads the team with 15.2 points and 7.0 rebounds despite being a 6’2 guard.

Patterson is second on the team with 13.4 points, but he has been on fire in his last six games averaging 20 points and showing a lot more aggression in his play–that is evident by his charity stripe visits, he has gone to the line 8+ times in every one of those games and he had three double-digit FT attempts games. FDU will need to defense Patterson without fouling.

PV A&M averages 75 points per game and are looking to run up-and-down the court and push the tempo whenever they can.

Defensively, they are lethal forcing turnovers–forcing 18+ per game. If they can get FDU to turn the ball over 15+ times, they will end up with the victory.

Get to know FDU

Fairleigh Dickinson has been covered a few times this season on MFST, and they too are coming in hot, winners of eight straight and 14 of their last 16 games.

Scouting both of these teams, they matchup very evenly, FDU scores the same amount of points per game as PV A&M (75) and gives up the same amount as well (72).

It will come down to how their stars matchup, and the Knights have three that you need to keep an eye on:

Darnell Edge– 16.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists per game–averaged 18 ppg during the NEC Tournament.

Jahlil Jenkins– 13.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.6 steals per game.

Mike Holloway Jr.- 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1 block per game.

If those three players are not held in check, the Knights will be battling Gonzaga on Thursday.
