It’s been four years since Paramore released new music with their last album, Paramore, so imagine fans’ surprise when they woke up to a new single, an album title, and a release date. So far it seems that fans are mixed. There’s always the separation between those who love and don’t mind a new sound and those who want a band to stick to their old and original style. I’m a fan in the first group. I don’t mind Paramore channeling the 80’s and a different sound. Paramore

After Jeremy Davis left the band, fans were worried about the band’s sound, particularly their basslines. In my opinion, “Hard Times” shows that they’ll be alright without the bassist. The beginning of the song sounds like a theme song for a children’s show, but once it picks up it resembles something more mature. The lyrics of the song are relatable for those of us who’ve had some obstacles and frustrations for the last few months. The sound of this new single is more like “Aint It Fun” and “Into You” than it is “Misery Business” or “That’s What You Get”.

The band’s next album will be called After Laughter. It’s set to be released on May 12th. I’m hoping it’ll be a mix of the new sound they want to explore, great ballad-like songs like “Last Hope”, and a little bit of their vintage sound. Paramore has always done a good job of mixing their style on recent albums, so I have faith they’ll do it again this time around, especially with Zac Farro playing drums for the album at least. Just like most Paramore songs I don’t absolutely love the first few listens, this one will probably grow on me.

Give a listen to Paramore’s “Hard Times” and let me know what you think. I’m giving it a 7.5/10.
