Florida Atlantic vs Arkansas State Preview

Series History

Arkansas State leads the all-time series 6-5. The Red Wolves took the lead in the series with a buzzer-beater to defeat the Owls 65-64 last season in Boca Raton.

Get to know FAU

FAU’s 7-2 record is its best start to a season since joining Division I. And their record is not that way due to a weak schedule. The team has played and beaten solid programs, like at UCF and home against Mercer in their latest contest.

The record though, is surprising with just three returners from last season’s roster, the Owls have only 22 percent of their scoring and 17 percent of their rebounding from the 2017-18 campaign. Those three returners (Anthony Adger, Jailyn Ingram, Simeon Lepichev) have done much of the heavy lifting so far this season, scoring 46 percent of the points and grabbing 39 percent of the team’s rebounds.

A player to watch though is freshman Jaylen Sebree–the 6’7 forward was a solid recruit for first-year head coach Dustin May who is looking to rebuild this program into a winner (so far so good).

Sebree is averaging 11 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 23 minutes a night.

The Owls travel outside of Florida for the first time since returning from the Bahamas to meet the Red Wolves tonight.

Get to know ASU

ASU is in the midst of a rough stretch of their schedule as they close out non-conference play and as a result, it’s been an up-and-down month for the Red Wolves. Starting the month off with a loss to a solid Lehigh program, to come back and beat Evansville before playing Big Ten power Minnesota in their last outing.

ASU lost to the Gophers 72-56, but played tough throughout. The team had eight blocked shots at Minnesota, the first time A-State has had eight or more blocks against Division I opponent since Feb. 4, 2016 against South Alabama (11).

Senior guard Ty Cockfield II has 20 or more points in five-straight games, the first A-State player to accomplish such since JJ Montgomery during the 2003-04 season. He is one of 22 players nationally to average 20+ points, three rebounds and three assists.

On the season he is pouring in 21.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes per night.

Cockfield has been the one constant for the Red Wolves as the team has used six different starting lineups in their nine games this season. He is the only A-State player to average in double figures.

Prediction

LINE: -1.5 Arkansas State

During non-conference play records can be deceiving…somewhat.

That’s why a 3-6 ASU team is favored over a 7-2 FAU squad. The Owls haven’t traveled outside of Florida for a regular non-conference game this season and are untested in these types of environments (not that A-State is going to have their gym packed for this contest).

Outside of Cockfield, there is no one on this Red Wolves team that can score consistently so FAU will be looking to shut him down.

I like FAU to continue their best Div.I season to-date with an upset victory.

Florida Atlantic 77 Arkansas State 74
