Food Network Star

This Sunday’s episode of Food Network Star started with seven contestants remaining. In the first challenge the contestants were asked to think of this particular round like midterms. They were to be given one ingredient and turn it into a recipe that was personal to them.

Potatoes were revealed to be the main component of the dishes. They were given an hour to cook and only one minute to demo their dishes.

Corey chose to make a roasted pork-loin, with sweet potatoes and apples. Jason made an uptown potato, with bourbon, bacon, butter and ricotta cheese.

Matthew made mashed potatoes with cheddar and pecorino cheese, poblano peppers with cream butter. Rusty made purple potato cakes with bacon tomato jam and a golden beet salad.

David made curried sweet potato with sauteed shrimp and mussels. Addy made ‘Pac-man’ potatoes with horseradish sauce for dipping. Amy made beef tenderloin with potatoes and chimichurri sauce.

The judges told Jason to include more info about his dish and less of his Kentucky one-line terminology. They weren’t fond of the cheese in his dish but otherwise loved the flavor.

Matt was reprimanded harshly for coming across ‘fake’ in front of the camera, but showed he wasn’t backing down. He came right back at the judges, asking for advice on how to improve his performance.

Amy won the round (midterm) and was given an advantage to use in the next round. Her advantage allowed her to choose the theme that the other contestants were able to cook. Emily Silver from the Lipton Corporation showed up to hint at a curveball contestants were thrown later in the show.

Amy chose picnic in the park. She served judges Bobby, Giada and Tiffany Thiessen cold lamb sandwiches with tomato chutney. She failed the story telling part of the demo and was told if she didn’t step up she would be going home.

David was given clam bake. He made a deconstructed lobster and crab clam bake on a plate. Jason wasn’t fond of the plating—soup shouldn’t be served on a plate.

Matt got pool party. He made scallop ceviche with pineapple and tortilla chips.

Corey made seafood gumbo with fried potato salad. His theme was Christmas in July, something he really struggled with. Addy got country boil. She decided to serve her kielbasa on skewers with various dipping sauces.

Jason made fried fish with fire cracker dipping sauce. His theme was the fourth of July. Finally Rusty got the garden party he made green pea with mint hummus, braised carrots and edible soil made from olives. Each contestant was told to incorporate Lipton tea into their dish.

Safe contestants were Rusty, Jason, Corey and Amy. The bottom contestants were David, Matt, and Addy.

Addy was the loser and was ultimately sent home. The judges cited her lack of enthusiasm when presenting.

As usual, Jason provided the comedic relief with his one-liners and his impersonation of a goat fainting while talking about Corey’s flustered plating. Stay tuned for our recap next week and our rankings of each of the contestants.
