‘Food Network Star’ Episode 8 Recap
There are now only five remaining contestants left on Food Network Star; Jason, Rusty, Corey, Matt, and Amy. Amy was worried if she doesn’t step up her game she would be the one sent home.
Josh Denny of the Food Network show Ginormous Foods joined Giada and Bobby as this week’s inspiration. The first challenge was that each contestant must make a ginormous dish using only a normal sized kitchen and utensils. They had to show their kitchen hack skills to accomplish the task. Brandi Malloy co-judged this week as well.
Jason made a bourbon-spiked stuffed French toast. He was his usual funny self but forgot to explain about his dish. The judges found it delicious. Cory made spaghetti and meatballs. He worried that the meatballs weren’t cooked all the way through but that wasn’t the last of his problems. He struggled with his presentation. He left 30 seconds on the clock during the presentation and the meatballs ended up being tough.
Amy made Dutch baby pancakes and did well with her presentation and dish. The pancakes had frosting and rainbow sprinkles. Next up was Rusty. He made a cheeseburger, but his kitchen hack tip wasn’t well received. He also used a large knife to cut the bread. Matt made a grilled cheese. The judges loved his sandwich and presentation. Amy who doubted her place won private time with Giada and Bobby who gave her advice on how to improve her performance.
The next challenge on Food Network Star is the Star Challenge. The contestants had to cook, teach, and answer questions while on a live-stream. There would be no messing up with a global audience. Alex Guarnaschelli also cooked alongside the contestants as if she was an audience member cooking along at home to gauge their cooking performance.
Rusty struggled with the challenge. He forgot to tell his viewers what he was cooking. Alex thought his dish was too complicated for cooks at home to prepare. He almost forgot an ingredient but saved himself at the last-minute. Cory was stiff in front of the camera. He didn’t tell the audience what he was doing in the kitchen and Alex couldn’t follow along with him. His dish was flavorful but his presentation didn’t make the cut. At one point, Giada said, “This is just painful” while watching him.
Amy was friendly and answered questions, but failed to wash her hands after touching raw chicken. The judges failed to taste her dish because of this and it lost her points. Jason made pork tenderloin with creamy tomato sauce. At first, he forgot to tell the audience how much of the ingredients to use but did a quick comeback. He offered them a great tip for cutting tomatoes. He won for food and his presentation. Matt had good energy but Alex found him hard to keep up with. His dumplings were great but the sauce was bitter.
In the end, Jason, Matt, and Rusty were safe. Cory and Amy were the bottom two and at risk of going home. Amy managed to stay despite her struggles in the Star Challenge because both of Cory’s presentations were weak. He went home due not to his cooking but his presentation. We’ll have to wait and see who’s the next contestant to go home on Food Network Star.
