Food Network Star

We are down to the Top 4 contestants on Food Network Star: Rusty, Matt, Jason and Amy. The first round the foursome are sent to LA’s hottest food trucks. They must report live to judges Bobby, Giada and Sabin Lomac.

The contestants worked with the following food trucks…

Rusty: Fish Taco truck

Matt: Hawaiian-themed truck

Amy: Italian-themed truck

Jason: Grilled cheese truck

They must find one dish on their truck that speaks to them and cook it. They have two minutes to present it to the judges LIVE.

Matt nails his interview on the food truck, showing enthusiasm paired nicely with professionalism. Rusty appears pushy and too aggressive with his interview, not allowing the owner of the Fish Taco truck to get more than one word in during the entire demo. Jason went over two minutes and judges found it uninteresting—a first for Jason who is usually top of his game. Amy did well and made the presentation fun.

Matt won round one, earning a crucial advantage in the next round…

In the next challenge, the Food Network Star kitchen is transformed into a gameday heaven. The contestants must combine two classic gameday foods into something totally different. Matthew’s advantage came in handy as he got to choose what “mashup” he would cook AND what the other contestants were going to cook as well. Here is the lineup Matthew chose…

Jason- Chili deviled eggs

Matt- Buffalo wing pizza pockets

Rusty– Loaded potato hot dogs

Amy- Nacho sliders

While prepping their meals, Amy leaves the tortilla chips out of her “nacho” slider, which turned out to be a big mistake as Bobby Flay explained later. Rusty’s hot dogs start to burn and only has five minutes to make a new batch. Jason has a hard time shelling his hard-boiled eggs he’s in such a time-crunch.

The presentation for their gameday meals was a combined show in which each contestant had two minutes to present and demo their dish, however, they needed to include the other contestants in the presentation.

Jason starts strong but fails to include the other contestants throughout his presentation and with only two chili deviled eggs prepared, he cuts the egg in half which drew criticism from the judges. Bobby and Giada thinks he ruined the presentation by doing so. Guest judge Jemele Hill thought his intro was strong and that he kept them engaged. She loved the taste of the egg.

Matt’s performance was strong, probably the best we have seen him all season. He looked comfortable in front of the camera and engaged the other contestants. Rusty does a poor job presenting, starting off negative, saying he got “stuck” with this dish. He then goes on to mispronounce cloche, saying cloak– but his dish was enjoyed by the judges. Amy lacked her usual energy as soon as her presentation started and then she begins to repeat herself. She loses points for the lack of tortilla chips.

Matt and Jason are safe and Amy and Rusty are the bottom contestants. Ultimately, it was decided that Amy was the next contestant to be eliminated.
