Freddie Freeman injury is more serious than anticipated
The Atlanta Braves were expecting first baseman Freddie Freeman to rejoin the team at the conclusion of the All-Star break, but that is not happening now. Freeman is expected to miss the rest of July with his wrist injury that has sidelined him for 23 games to-date. A blow to a Braves team that desperately needs their best hitter in the lineup, the duo of Chris and Kelly Johnson, who are filling in for Freeman, are well below his caliber.

Jeff Schultz from the Atlanta-Journal Constitution talked with Braves president of baseball operations John Hart, who was quoted saying, “It’s more serious than we expected. I’m hoping he’ll be back before the first of August but he may not be. He’s working hard to get back but it’s a slow-healing injury and it still gives him pain when he swings. He dinged it, played four or five days with it, and we have him a few days off. We gave him an injection and thought he would be back in two or three days but it was no better. We did further tests and found it was more serious than we thought.”
Freeman who played in all 162 games last season, is being joined on the DL by Braves closer Jason Grilli who ruptured his achilles right before the All-Star break. With the Braves currently seven games back of the first-place Nationals, they will need an impressive run with less talented players to push for a playoff berth, an unlikely scenario for a team that was not expected to compete in 2015.
