Garrett Richards was easily the Angels best pitcher during the 2014 season, however a knee injury while attempting to cover first base ended his season prematurely. The diagnoses: a ruptured patellar tendon that would require surgery.

Less than seven months removed from surgery, Richards will make his season debut today against the Houston Astros. The Angels flamethrower went 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA to go along with 164 punch-outs, numbers that would have warranted Cy-Young consideration if he stayed healthy.

So what should we suspect from Richards this season? Well, his stuff is nasty and that should not change, but it may take him a couple starts to shake the rust off. In his simulated games, Richards has looked sharp showing great command of his slider and change-up.

The Astros are averaging less than three runs per game, so his opponent for his first start could not be better. More than likely, Richards is owned in your fantasy league, but if for some chance he’s available you should scoop him up asap. Trading for the right-hander might not be a bad idea either, you should not have to give up a lot for the ace of the Angels staff.

How do you think Garret Richards will fare this season? Let me know in the comments below…
