Gifted Movie Review
Gifted stars Chris Evans as Frank Adler a single man raising his niece a child prodigy Mary played by Mckenna Grace.
Frank inherits Mary after he comes home from a date to find his sister whom he had blown off to make this date dead on the floor of his bathroom.
The movie opens with Frank and Mary who are now in Florida talking about her 1st day of school, and he’s also talking to her about blending in, as she is a math genius and is going to find 1st grade math not challenging enough.
Here are my thoughts on Gifted
At the core of the movie, we have Frank who is trying to hold on to the one thing that makes sense in his life, His niece, but told with great character, vulnerable, and laugh out loud moments. It totally skips being a sappy movie.
Frank: A former philosophy professor/ playboy. Is trying his best to care for Mary and give her a normal life, which is what he thinks his sister would’ve wanted, as he is both fueled by his greatest fear of ruining her life and his guilt of not being there for his sister before her suicide.
Evelyn: Mary’s over bearing grandmother, who wants to shelter and cultivate Mary’s brilliance as she had done with her mom (Diane) She’s a bad person, but not all together terrible, because just as Mary struggles to connect to connect with people, she struggles to connect because of her ambition, and the fact that she got married and didn’t fully accomplish her own goals.
Bonnie: Played by Jenny Slate, who is known often for her comedy, switches things up and delivers a more serious character as Mary’s concerned 1st grade teacher.
Roberta: Played by Octavia Spencer, rounds out this beautiful cast. Roberta is the pairs only real companion, and also watches Mary on Friday nights so that Frank can have a semblance of “His Life”. Not much is told about Roberta’s backstory other than her connection to the pair is deep and she truly cares for Frank and Mary. Their communication is heartfelt.
To be fair, not much is told about anyone else’s backstory, except for Frank and Mary’s, but it’s okay and it works for this movie.
I genuinely enjoyed the movie, and the story between Frank and Mary. Also I enjoyed this outing by Chis Evans where he isn’t dressed up as Captain America.
Gifted opens April 7th in theaters.
