‘Gotham’ – Catwoman and Riddler Persona To Debut
Gotham, which is in its third season and likely headed for a fourth, mainly focuses on the early career of Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie). In the show Jim has not yet become the commissioner we know him to be from the comics, in fact Jim in the show has quite a dark past. The show also explores the early childhood/teenage years of Bruce Wayne as he tries to make sense of his parents murder but the show lives and dies with the villains. When the show was promoted they used the tag lines “Before the Riddler”, “Before Catwoman”, “Before Penguin”. So far in the show the Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) has embraced his Penguin persona and even though he hates being called Penguin, he is known as the Penguin. Well it seems that two more characters are going to be taking on their respective alter ego’s this season or for sure next season. Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) sat down with CinemaBlend and had this to say ,
“Especially after this next episode airs, Episode 13; I think she’s actually going to believe in herself and she’s actually going to believe that she’s a strong independent person,”
“I think she’s always said that to make herself feel better and make it easier for her to live and survive, but after instances that are going to be occurring in her life soon, I think they’re actually going to force her to actually believe that she is this strong independent young lady instead of just telling herself that. I think that’s one step she’s going to be taking to becoming Catwoman.”
Since Gotham returned to television on Monday they have teased the return of another character, Jerome. Many fans know that Jerome is Gotham’s version of the insane clown known as The Joker. Gotham even went as far as to show the Joker’s symbol during the show. Now the show has not confirmed that Jerome will be calling himself the Joker but with show runners confirming that Harley Quinn will be coming to Gotham at the end of this season, it is safe to assume they will before too long.
Another actor who will soon be taking on his villains persona is Cory Michael Smith’s Riddler. The actor even has stated he will be getting the Riddler costume as well. When asked he had this to say,
“It is performative; not in a Jim Carrey way, I want him to be kind of showy. So what we have as the Riddler costume is really classy, and that’s kind of what we wanted. I do not have a cane yet, but I want one so badly for a few different reasons; I won’t tell you all of them so I don’t spoil anything, but I’m pitching very had for a cane, I want him to be someone who deserves a fucking cane. He needs to be someone that’s just begging for a cane.”
So while the show teased the BEFORE, it seems that they are going away from that and we will be seeing our favorite villains becoming who they were meant to be within the next few weeks and into next season. Gotham continues to take liberties with the DC characters and change them up as they see fit for the story. They have given Joker a name, they have turned Barbra Gordon into a villain, and they even teased a romantic relationship between Penguin and Riddler. Earlier this year they cast a new actress for Poison Ivy in an effort to take advantage of her seductive side. We have seen her use her new beauty to seduce men. Bruce and Selina also have an on again off again relationship, with them even being boyfriend and girlfriend this season. I applaud Gotham for taking risks and I think it is these risks that will help drive this show to new heights.
