The Memphis Grizzlies acquired PG Luke Ridnour from Orlando on Wednesday. But no one had the feeling like Ridnour would be on the roster come October. They were right. Ridnour was traded to Charlotte Thursday morning for Matt Barnes. Charlotte had just acquired Matt Barnes last week in a deal for Lance Stephenson. The 35-year-old Barnes has now come full circle, landing back in Memphis, where he was drafted in 2002.

Barnes never played a game for Memphis as he was traded that summer to Cleveland. He was cut before ever playing a game. He bounced around in the D-League before finally landing a contract with the Clippers in 2004. They didn’t renew his contract and he was picked up in October of 2004 by Sacramento but was traded to the 76er’s later that season. He never played a game for Philadelphia but was signed as a free agent by the Knicks in 2005. To say that Matt Barnes is a journeyman is an understatement. Maybe his journeyman days are over and he has found his home in Memphis.

The Memphis Grizzlies grit n grind style fits Barnes perfectly. There has not been a more hard nose defender and pest to opposing players in the NBA since, well, Tony Allen. Putting Barnes and Allen on the floor at the same time would cause major headaches offensively for opposing teams. Barnes can play the three spot on the floor with Tony Allen at the two. Barnes also adds some outside shooting for the Grizzlies, which they desperately need. But this doesn’t solve the main issue that the Grizzlies have.

The Grizzlies have built a reputation as a tough defensive team that wants to grind it out in a 90-88 type of game. Defense was not their issue in the playoffs this year, or last year, or the year before for that matter. The Grizzlies need to add a dynamic scorer and shooter. And they just may have a plan. Immediately following the talk of the Barnes trade, the news came in that the Grizzlies are very actively pursuing Danilo Gallinari. Gallinari is a 6’10” small forward from Italy that is currently with the Denver Nuggets. He is a shooter and stretch four. He is a dynamic offensive player that could play multiple spots for the Grizz and help keep the offense from getting stagnant when Gasol and Z-Bo are not on the floor.

Whether or not the Grizzlies have a chance at landing Gallinari, I applaud their efforts for looking in the right direction. I can also say that the Grizzlies are actively trying to improve their roster and know what it’s going to take to do that. All of this on the day of the draft. The Grizzlies still have the 25th pick in tonight’s draft. I expect a lot of wheeling and dealing tonight, not just from the Grizzlies, but from several teams looking to alter their roster after seeing an undersized Golden State shoot their way to an NBA title this year. Another reason I expect a trade tonight involving the Grizz is they do not have a 2nd Round pick, so they have one chance to make something happen tonight.
