The Memphis Grizzlies started draft day early this year. Thursday morning they traded Luke Ridnour, who they acquired via trade from Orlando yesterday, to Charlotte for Matt Barnes. They ended draft night by getting versatile big man from LSU, Jarell Martin.

The Grizzlies went into the draft needing scoring and Jarell Martin can provide that down low. He is a very talented low post player with explosive dunking ability. Without any other moves, the Grizzlies managed to somehow get better defensively with Barnes, and add scoring with Martin. Jarrell can also shoot from mid-range. The selection of Martin will help the offense move and not get stagnant once Gasol and Randolph come out.

I would not be shocked if the Grizzlies are not done making moves. While I do think Martin can provide scoring and athleticism that the Grizzlies are lacking, the pick is still not what I expected. We’ll see if the Grizzlies hang on to Martin and use him off the bench next season, or package him in a trade. They are also most likely to lose Kosta Koufos, so getting another big makes sense in that regard.

I am personally surprised by the pick when R.J. Hunter was available and even some other big men like Montrezl Harrell and Kevon Looney. I have questioned Chris Wallace’s draft choices before, even as lately as last year when he selected Jordan Adams, who did not play much at all this year. But the Grizzlies have been great in Wallace’s tenure so he has earned my trust. But let the debate begin because Jarell Martin was not the talk of the town today, in fact he wasn’t mentioned at all that I heard. So is the Grizzlies roster now complete, most likely not. But Memphis fans will now play GM and have plenty to talk about tomorrow and beyond.
