Group D: Group of Death comes to a close
Group D came to a close Tuesday night with USA and Australia moving on from the Group of Death to the Round of 16. The United States surprised no one by finishing first in the group but Australia shockingly ended group play as the second place qualifier. Sweden still have to qualify as one of the top four three-seeds but their fate is no longer in their hands
The USA-Nigeria match came to a close with underwhelming performances from both squads’ midfields. The lone goal was typically scored from a USA set-piece finished by Abby Wambach in the 45th minute from a Megan Rapinoe corner kick. The goal uncharacteristically went in off of Wambach’s curled foot instead of the usual header as she streaked towards the back post beating two Nigerian defenders. The USA defense was the star of the game yet again as they put in another strong clean sheet against a world-class squad. The USA defenders have now let in only one goal this tournament so far but the rest of the team squeaked by with only three goals.
The Australia-Sweden match finished in another upsetting draw for Sweden. The result gave Australia four points from their three matches to send them into the next round as the surprise second seed. Lisa De Vanna netted a fifth minute goal to get the Matildas off to a quick start. The Australian tally was answered ten minutes later by Sweden’s Sofia Jakobsson in the 15th minute from distance passed the outstretched fingers of Lydia Williams.
The USA women will play the loser of tomorrow’s England-Colombia match (England in the event of a draw) on Monday at 8 P.M. EST in Edmonton. Australia now have the unenviable task of facing powerhouse Brazil in Moncton on Sunday at 1 P.M. EST.
