Hanley RamirezIn a surprising and some would say, baffling move, the Boston Red Sox have designated first baseman and designated hitter Hanley Ramirez for assignment.

This designation now means that the Sox have seven days to either trade or release Hanley. This move was thought to be in response to Dustin Pedroia being activated after a rehab stint, but Pedroia has yet to play this season and there is no way to know how he will respond, especially after his 1-for-14 performance in Triple-A Pawtucket.

Ramirez is currently hitting .254 with 6 home runs and 29 RBIs.
