Hard Knocks Rams

We start the third episode of Hard Knocks 2016 out with intensity. With dreams being chased, and futures being erased.

The opening sequence has defensive tackle Ethan Westbrooks talking about leaving his job at Toys “R” Us to go all-in on an NFL career, and getting chastised by defensive line coach Mike Waufle. We also saw that rookie wide receiver Paul McRoberts lost his 18-year-old step brother in a shooting three weeks ago.

With tragic news like that to open the show, we need a little fun and family time. So we shift scenes to Disneyland and hang out with the team. We see Will Hayes still chasing down mermaids, and we see the father-son connection between head coach Jeff Fisher and his son, Rams defensive backs coach, Brandon Fisher.

We spend the next few minutes learning that Nelson Spruce had a great preseason game number one, but tweaked his knee doing so. We also learned that number 30 is on the do not touch list in practice. In case you are not aware, number 30 is Todd Gurley. And we found out that Mike Singletary is still a bad man!

So lets move on to the quarterback competition. Heading into preseason game number two, the goal was to let number one pick in the draft, Jared Goff, play with the starters. While Goff had a decent fourth quarter, after episode three I was left with the impression that Kimberly Keenum knew the playbook better than Jared Goff.

The series is obviously focusing on some rookies and young guys trying to make the team. Ethan Westbrooks, Ian Seau, Brandon Chubb, Eric Kush, and Austin Hill to name a few. You have a feeling that one or more of these guys will be the ones getting the call to come meet with Jeff Fisher in the last couple of episodes. The sign of doom is when they are asked to do so while bringing their playbook. Or iPad in today’s world.

Next week it will get real as the roster is cut from 90 to 75. Stay tuned.
