In the past few months as the highly anticipated Suicide Squad movie is getting close to showing in theaters this summer, there has been talk about a Harley Quinn spin-off movie in the works. So of course ideas are flying around of who is going to show up alongside our beloved psychotic cutie pie. Choices such as Poison Ivy, Batgirl, and Catwoman are obvious and great, but I would love to see someone new who hasn’t already had a live action adaptation. Miss Quinzel herself is an exciting example of this, and the fan feedback seems to have been a smart move by the minds putting together the DCMU. As we all know, she got her start back in the 90’s in Batman the Animated Series as basically a walk in since it seemed silly to have Mistah J jump out a cake. From there she got her origin story explored in the comic “Mad Love”. She has become as much of a cultural icon as her Puddin. Some would argue maybe more so. Now I want to put down my wildcard suggestion to everyone and share someone I fangirl love for her own twist of crazy. Her name is Duela Dent, but she would prefer to be called Joker’s Daughter.

Harley Quinn vs Joker's Daughter

She first made her appearance in Batman Family #6 back in 1976. She was created by Bob Rozakis. She started her innocent mayhem around Gotham posing as various villain’s offspring to catch the attention of Dick Grayson, the first Robin. After sometime of her shenanigans, he finally found out that she was in fact the child of one of Gotham’s main villains, Harvey Dent aka Two-Face. After being confronted with this reveal, Duela confessed that she was doing all of this to atone for her father’s crimes and actually wanted to be part of Teen Titans. She was accepted into the group and changed her name to Harlequin. So sorry Harley fans, Duela did it first. After the Teen Titan comics were canceled she moved over to make various appearances in Batman titles as Card Queen. Prior to her redesign in New 52 Duela had crossed paths with many key DC heroes and villains of Gotham’s beloved landscapes as well as those not so nice areas, such as the many mental institutions due to being delusional and schizophrenic. Her first Post-Crisis appearance was going to hint on the reason for her state being due to her time warping experience. At some point later on she claimed to have been brought back via Lazarus Pit and her mother might be the villainous parent. Eventually Duela is killed off by a Monitor because she actually came from an alternate universe and didn’t belong in the one she was currently in.

So it seems this diamond in the rough has been a character that DC has been wanting to do something with but just can’t quite seem to fit her anywhere. That is until now with this new and improved new 52 Duela crazy enough to wear the not so fresh face of Joker. She even out did herself by tracking down the man who removed the face just so she could have him permanently sew it onto her own. And don’t forget the toxic blood he just so happen to have around for Duela to inject into the vein in her neck. Talk about commitment and devotion to the crazy. This is the version of Duela Dent that I fell in love with around the time I found out about the movie last year, before then I never knew there was such a character. I thought for years that Harley Quinn was our female Joker equivalent for those of us who weren’t really into Catwoman or Ivy. One reason why I like Joker’s Daughter is how she isn’t sexualized in her dress or how she interacts with other in Gotham. Her outfit looks like it had comfort in mind to beat down those who cross her. You could also argue her design is due to her being basically jail-bait. She is only sweet sixteen after all. But she single-handedly overthrew a patriarchal society in Gotham Underground, so I guess age doesn’t matter in this matter. Sometime after doing that, she ran around with Red Hood and Arsenal trying to be a Rent-a-Bat like them unfortunately she just couldn’t cut it with the boys. Eventually she was recruited by Victor Sage into the Suicide Squad along side Harley and Deadshot. She has yet to meet her Daddy J in comic form, so this is my pitch basically to bring them together on the big screen in the most over the top way possible. Hopefully I’m not just fan girling for one here.
