Herd drops first conference game of season
Senior James Kelly led Marshall with 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Thundering Herd fell to Charlotte 103-95 Thursday night.
The loss ended a 5-game win streak for Marshall, who started 5-0 in the conference for the first time in school history.
Adrien White led the 49ers with 30 points (8 of 9 from 3-point range) on the night, followed by Joseph Uchebo, who had 24 points and 21 rebounds. The double-digit scoring continued for Charlotte with Jon Davis, 21, and Curran Scott, 18. The rest of the team combined for just 10.
Rounding out the stats for the Herd, Jon Elmore finished the evening with 27 points, 5 of 8 from the 3-point line. Ryan Taylor followed with 17 points and Stevie Browning added 14 after sitting a majority of the first half with two fouls.
In the past five games, 95 would have been enough for another Herd victory, but the defense couldn’t seem to put together the stops they needed to win. Every time Marshall went on a run, Charlotte answered. The Herd got the game back within single digits many times in the second half, but just couldn’t piece together the comeback.
Charlotte finished 23 of 29 (79%) from the free throw line, an entire 15% above their season average of 64%. That’s what it would come down to, and it’s something that the 49ers Head Coach Mark Price wanted to focus on coming into this one.
Marshall travels to Norfolk, VA to take on the Monarchs of Old Dominion on Saturday. ODU snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Western Kentucky Thursday night as well. They moved to 10-9 on the season, and the Herd falls to 9-10. Marshall will look to avoid a losing skid before they head into the toughest part of conference play.
