IUPUI vs Wright State Preview

IUPUI vs Wright State Prediction

The Horizon League Tournament begins tonight with top-seeded Wright State (19-12, 13-5) taking on the eight-seed, IUPUI (16-16, 8-10) in the quarterfinals inside WSU’s Nutter Center. The game will tip-off at 8:00 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN+. The winner will move on to the semifinals round of the Horizon League Tournament and play at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 11 inside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, while the loser will await a call from a possible postseason tournament.

Wright State has won seven of its last eight games and are coming off a 65-62 win at Milwaukee last Saturday night. Overall, Loudon Love leads the Raiders in scoring and rebounding at 15.6 and 8.1.  He also ranks seventh and third in those categories for the Horizon League. Bill Wampler with 14.6 and Cole Gentry at 12.0 also average in double figures.  All three players rank in the conference’s top 20 scoring race.

IUPUI will be the number eight seed of the tournament, tying for sixth place with Youngstown State and Detroit Mercy.  The Jags have dropped six of their last eight games, including a pair at Detroit Mercy 87-85 and at Oakland 74-63 last weekend.

Junior guard Camron Justice leads the IUPUI offense at 18.9 points per game and 86 three-pointers made while sophomore Jaylen Minnett chimes in at 11.9 points and 73 three-pointers made, exclusively off the Jaguars’ bench. Senior forward Evan Hall is averaging 9.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and center Ahmen Ismail has made a steady ascent up the Jaguars’ scoring ranks, sitting at 8.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 61.1 percent from the floor.

The Jaguars have played more than their share of close games in league play with six games decided by a single possession in Horizon League action. IUPUI missed either a game tying or potential go-ahead attempt in the final seconds of four of those games, all resulting in Jaguar defeats.

Been here before…

Wright State ran through the tournament last year as they secured the Horizon League’s NCAA berth, defeating Green Bay (87-72), Milwaukee 59-53 and Cleveland State (74-57).  In 2018, the Raiders made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2007, falling to Tennessee at the Dallas Regional.  WSU is 3-1 in league tournament games under head coach Scott Nagy while they are 24-23 in conference tournament games overall.  WSU also won the 1993 Mid-Continent Conference (now Summit League) Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

All-time and season series

Wright State has never met IUPUI in a conference tournament game before, but WSU leads the overall series 12-3, winning both meetings this year: 72-64 on Dec. 30 at the Nutter Center and 79-74 on Feb. 3 in Indy.

Next up

The winner of this matchup will take on the winner of the UIC-Green Bay game played at GB Tuesday night.

Prediction

LINE: -8 Wright State

O/U: 140.5

Dan’s Bet: +8 IUPUI and Over 140.5

The trends in this game are crazy as both teams are an even 7-7 as road dogs and home favorites. IUPUI is a solid eight-seed and should be able to hang with WSU for most of this game.

Score Prediction: Wright State 77 IUPUI 71
