Horizon Tournament: Green Bay vs Wright State Prediction
Horizon Tournament: Green Bay vs Wright State Preview
The Wright State men’s basketball team will continue its quest for a second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid when they play Green Bay Monday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit in the Little Caesars Horizon League Tournament semifinals.
The No. 4 seed has been both kind to Green Bay and Motor City Madness as a whole, boasting a 9-1 record since the tournament’s first year in Detroit in 2015-16. GB ran the table with a perfect 4-0 record in that first season, and Northern Kentucky followed suit the next year by going a perfect 3-0 to lift the trophy. Add in a win by Oakland the next season, and GB’s win over UIC in the Quarterfinals, and the No. 4 seed owns a .900 winning percentage in MCM. The No. 1 seed was 0-3 in the tournament before Wright State’s win this season in the Quarterfinals, but the top seed is still searching for its first win in the Motor City.
How they got here…
The Raiders, 20-12 overall, have won two straight and 12 of their last 14 games, including a convincing 71-56 decision at home against IUPUI in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Tournament Tuesday night. Bill Wampler led the way with 18 points as Loudon Love added 13 points and nine rebounds. Love leads the Raiders in scoring at 15.5 points per game, followed by Wampler at 14.8 and Cole Gentry at 11.7. Love also leads the team in rebounding at 8.1 per game, ranking third in the conference. WSU leads the Horizon league in points allowed, giving up 67.8 points, while Green Bay’s offense ranks first at 81.2 points scored per game.
Senior Sandy Cohen III has been the catalyst to the success of Green Bay this season, averaging 18.2 PPG in Horizon League play and earning First Team All-Horizon League honors for his efforts. Cohen has been playing his best basketball of late, having now scored 20 or more points in five out of his last six games, including a team-high 21 points against UIC in the quarterfinals.
The team’s split their season series one win a piece on their home floors. Green Bay ended the regular season with a 70-67 victory at home over WSU, exacting revenge on the Raiders team that bested them 87-75 at the end of January.
