Ed Oliver
(Joe Buvid / For Houston Athletics )

Ed Oliver has flown under-the-radar as much as a potential Top 5 NFL Draft pick can. I have a feeling this upcoming season that will change.

Not only will Ed Oliver be one of the top NFL Draft prospects in college football this season, he is already being considered a Heisman Trophy hopeful–which is difficult to do when you play defensive line.

But with his numbers, you can see why–he’s totaled 139 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 39.5 TFLs, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 12 passes defended during his career at Houston.

Houston head coach Major Applewhite spoke at AAC Media Days and said Houston will work to get the ball to its All-American defensive tackle as many times as possible this fall.

The last Heisman winner to be a defensive-first player was Michigan’s Charles Woodson in 1997, and he also played offense and special teams. The last Heisman winner from a Group of 5 school was BYU’s Ty Detmer in 1990.

It’s doubtful Oliver will win the award–but as long as we can watch our No.1 ranked player in the 2019 NFL Draft, I’m okay with that.
