This offseason the Boston Red Sox will be looking to upgrade a pitching staff that has underperformed all season. Although lately the starting rotation has been better, the absence of key members of that rotation, make it impossible to say that they have turned it around. Rick Porcello has been bad all year and just returned from the DL. Justin Masterson had a terrible year  which led to his release less than two weeks ago. The only starter who has been able to stay healthy and produce quality results is Wade Miley, whose ERA is above four and a half.

The Red Sox need to upgrade the rotation this winter and if there were a time to need a number one starter, this would be a great time. There will be two free agents this winter who both have the ability to be front of the line aces, David Price and Johnny Cueto. Both will command a large sum of money over an extended period of time. If there is one team that can afford that kind of commitment, the Red Sox are that team.

David Price is probably the better option based on the fact that he has pitched in the American League his entire career. Not only has he been in the American League, he has pitched the AL East for almost all of his career, starting with the Rays and now for the Blue Jays. Although Cueto has pitched well since being traded to the Royals, Price’s experience in the AL East gives him the edge in my mind.

The Red Sox will need to make a big commitment to a starter in order to fix their rotation. Having a pitcher who can be relied upon every fifth day can make the other starters better. In my opinion, David Price would be the perfect fit as ace who can lead the Red Sox back to contention in 2016.
