How to Get Away with Murder is Back!
One of the best shows on television, How to Get Away with Murder, returned on January 26th after ending the first half of the season with a shocking cliff hanger in November of last year.
The last episode ended with the audience finally finding out who died in an explosion at Annalise Keating’s house. There was uproar and shock when it was revealed that it was main character (and fan favorite) Wes Gibbons. To further shock and scandal, it’s also revealed that Wes was dead before the explosion!
Annalise is the prime suspect in the fire and has been arrested and charged with arson and first degree murder. The episode starts with her being placed in a cell with two other women, awaiting her bail hearing.
A pregnant Laurel is recovering from the explosion and the pain of losing Wes in the hospital. Bonnie tries to figure out if she knows who started and the fire and Laurel suspects ex boyfriend Frank. Bonnie claims she doesn’t believe her, but goes and interrogates Frank who denies having any part in the explosion.
Bonnie then visits Annalise in jail and is told that she must be her lawyer in her hearing the next day. Bonnie lacks confidence and urges her that someone one else should be her lawyer and that she’ll have a better chance at getting bail without her, but Annalise won’t accept anyone else.
Through out the episode everyone is having memories of Wes. Annalise remembers seeing him at the beginning of the semester, looking happy for the first time in a while. Laurel dreams about an intimate moment they shared not too long ago. Asher (who other than Laurel is the only one who seems sad about Wes’s death) fondly remembers Wes saving him form an awkward situation, Connor recalls talking to Wes about how much he missed his ex boyfriend Oliver. Michaela thinks of the time she helped Wes pick out jewelry for Laurel that wouldn’t look cheap.
Oliver discovers what happened the night of the bonfire when Wes killed Sam Keating in order to save Rebecca’s life and Annalise, Michaela, Connor and Laurel helped burn and bury the body. It is clear he’s contemplating whether or not to go to the police.
Bonnie gets Annalise’s bail hearing moved a day later to wait for Wes’s autopsy report that will hopefully have evidence that exonerates Annalise. Bonnie still doubts that she is the best lawyer for Annalise.
While the others are arguing in Laurel’s hospital room, she reveals that Wes is the father of her baby and not Frank. Connor tell her if that’s the case, she should get rid of it and Asher attacks him. It becomes abundantly clear that Connor wants to be hurt, egging Asher on, telling him to hit him. Later Michaela apologizes for Asher’s behavior and tells Laurel that no matter what her decision is when it comes to the baby, she will be there for her.
At the bail hearing, Bonnie starts off doing well, but things take an unfortunate turn when it is revealed that Wes was going to sign an immunity deal to testify against Annalise right before he died. Annalise’s bail is denied and she is to await her trial in jail. In addition the prosecutors in the case reveal to the public that Wes died of smoke inhalation, even though the medical examiner had previously told Nate that it wasn’t the fire that killed him.
At the end of the episode, Frank goes to the D.A. and confesses he was the one who killed Wes. We then see a flash back to the day Wes died when he was walking out of the police station after receiving a call. As he’s walking down the street, Frank pulls up next to him in a car and Wes gets in the car with him.
I think this was a great episode to come back with. The characters have grown and changed so much since the first season, and this episode does an amazing job showcasing that. It is admittedly difficult to still see Wes in flashbacks, knowing that he’s now dead. I also think that this is one of the best shows on television because of its structure. The first half of the seasons are spent playing catch up and the second half is full of flash backs.
