How to look after your tennis racket
Whether or not you are a professional tennis player or you simply play as a hobby, you should know the importance of taking care of your tennis racket. They are not cheap investments, so you need to do prepare maintenance so that they will remain as a good investment even in the years to come. Some players even get their rackets services by certified professionals to ensure that it is still functioning well. If you are at a loss of how to take care of racket, here are some tips you can do.
- Put it in the proper storage – If you are the type of person who plays tennis regularly, you probably like leaving your tennis racket inside your car. This might seem like a smart decision as it is more convenient to just leave it there and get it when you need to use it. But such a habit can be bad for your equipment. The season and temperature can greatly affect your racket. if it becomes too hot, the frame of your racket may actually deform and become warped. In some instances, it might even explode! So even inside the home, you should keep it away from the radiator. Meanwhile, if it’s’ too cold, your strings might get brittle and break.
- Only use it for hitting the tennis ball – This might seem like silly advice, but you’ll be surprised to know that people still do this. It might not be as extreme as you might think, but sometimes out of frustration, people hit the ground with their tennis rackets. If not the ground, some hit the net. This may damage your racket, and you will definitely feel the difference when your tennis becomes compromised and is not able to perform like before.
- Change the strings often – This is a given. It is impossible that your racket strings’ performance will still be the same after some time. While some may say that putting on new strings should be done once a year if you play often you should restring your racket more than once a year. Some experts say that you the number of times you should change your string should be the same number of how often you actually play in a week. So if you play tennis twice a week, then you should change your racket strings twice a year. Don’t skip this test as the wear and tear of the strings is directly related to the control, power and how the racket feels in your hand. Your game will definitely be affected if you neglect to change your strings.
- Replace the grip at least every six months – It’s not only the strings that need to be changed often, but also the grip. This time, you need to change it so that you can still feel comfortable while playing. It is also a breeding ground for bacteria, so not changing the grip might affect the player’s health directly. Your grips should be replaced at least twice in a year to ensure safety and comfort.
