How will Marshall’s offense run without Cato?
That’s exactly what they’ll do. Run the football. What else would you do with the 6th best running back in the country?
Quarterback Rakeem Cato accounted for 4,385 yards of total offense during his senior year. He also threw for 40 touchdowns and ran for another eight. All of that disappears this season. Marshall’s starting quarterback will be James Madison University transfer Michael Birdsong, who threw for 26 TD’s and 16 INT’s in his time there.
That’s a huge drop off in performance from Cato’s numbers. The other QB in line for the starting position is Gunnar Holcombe, Cato’s backup. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out as both have two more years left to play, lucky for both of these QB’s, Marshall has one of the best receiving cores in the nation to help ease the transition.
So back to the running game. Devon Johnson, better known in Huntington as Rockhead, ran for 1,767 yards and 17 TD’s in 11 games last season. This year he is expected to surpass the 2,000 yard mark and be a dark horse for the Heisman trophy. His backup, Remi Watson, is good enough to start just about anywhere in the country himself. His specialty? Speed. Look for Rockhead and Watson to dismantle defenses in C-USA this season and help lead the Herd to another successful season.
Watch some highlights (with humor) of the running back well-known for his bruising #stiffarm: WATCH
Marshall is expected by many to win the East Division again, with some heavy competition from Western Kentucky. The Herd stands a great chance at going undefeated. I’ll have an article on that in the weeks to come.
